Over at OntGolf.ca there is a great review of the new Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club. Robert Thompson has just returned from Merritt, BC after spending some time with the course’s creator Richard Zokol.
This is an interesting course in that it has tried to take a minimalist approach to its design despite its challenging location. From the review:
Thankfully the second hole is a better example of the minimalist style Zokol likes to discuss, both from a design and playability perspective. The truth appears to be that more earth was moved in creating Sagebrush than a purist would like. Minimalism suggests a limited amount of earth moving, though that’s not always the case on courses attributed to minimalist designers like Tom Doak or Bill Coore. Sometimes earth is moved to create the impression little dirt was moved. In some instances it is an illusion created by an exceptionally talented shaper who nails all the details of the natural surroundings.

As you’ll see from Robert Thompson’s post over at OntGolf.ca Ian Andrew has started to work his magic with the historic course.
By removing trees and allowing for more light and better air flow through key parts of the course the process of improving its condition to its former glory has begun.

9th hole at Highlands Links with better light and more grass.

Bond Head will now be a daily fee course in the Clublink family
News broke a few weeks ago that the Club at Bond Head had been absorbed by Clublink corporation and would join Glen Abbey as a premium daily fee course open to the public.
The two courses – the links style South Course and the parkland style North Course – will no doubt be popular with Clublink members and continue to attract public golfers as well.
Speculation began in Ontario golf circles about what would happen with Bond Head when club GM Nigel Hollidge departed the club early in 2009. It makes sense now that a high profile GM would not be required once Clublink came in and applied their stamp to the facility.

Not many of us can brag about having played the amazing Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, New Jersey.
Pine Valley is widely considered one of the top 3, if not the top course in America. As a private club it is extremely difficult to secure a tee time.
Author Robert Thompson has played Pine Valley twice and talks about it on his G4G blog.
Check it out here.

As the world of golf descends on Montreal for the President’s Cup, it only makes sense to give you a taste of this special course.
A private course, Royal Montreal is revered courses in Canada. The Blue Course, where the Presidents Cup will be played was originally designed by Dick Wilson, but was then renovated by golf course designer Rees Jones in 2004. The signature hole on the course is No. 16, a 444-yard par 4 that will test the world’s best players, especially off the tee.
Founded in 1873, Royal Montreal Golf Club is the oldest golf club in all of North America. Created as the Montreal Golf Club, the prefix of “Royal” was granted by Queen Victoria in 1884. The 2nd club location – “Dixie” – was located on the side of Mont Royal in downtown Montreal, Quebec.
Royal Montreal Golf Club has a long history of hosting some of the biggest golf events in all of Canada, and has been the host of the Canadian Open a total of nine times, second only to Glen Abbey Golf Course.
The list of winners at Royal Montreal is an impressive one: players such as Bob Gilder, Tom Weiskopf and Scott Verplank have hoisted the Canadian Open trophy on at the historic course.
